Link Building with Text link Ads
I’ve decided to slowly work ads into this blog, partly to make some money (at least enough for hosting), but mostly to experiment with some of the newer non-AdSense advertising programs. First up is Text Link Ads*. Right now, I have none :). They would be located in my sidebar menu, under the label that says “Sponsors”.
Applying to Text Link Ads is easy enough, but it seems that things go much smoother if you have a PageRank of 4 or greater. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for advertisers to buy links on your site. We’ll see how it goes, and I will be happy to report on any progress. Of course, you will be able to see progress as my Sponsors area (hopefully) fills up.
Here is where you would go to buy a link on my site: Sponsor Fresh Yields. Because my Alexa ranking is so low, it only costs you $15 a month to get your link on a PR4 blog. If you buy a link, I will also dedicate at least one blog post reviewing your site, using keywords where appropriate.

Way to go Adsense Free Steve!
If you want to boost your price for TLA on your site work on getting your Alexa rank up. The easiest way, install the toolbar yourself. (If it doesn’t drive you crazy)
Best of luck!

Be wary of advertisers that place a hard link to another site in your page code. Google has an interest in making sure that serps and pagerank mean something, and the devil’s money you take now may come back to haunt your site later.
Think I’m full of hot air? Go search “Text Link Ads” on Google and tell me where they rank in Google’s search results.

I’ve used Text link ads before. I guess it may have helped in the SEO, but I spent over $300 a month and only got about 10 hits from the links. Is this par for the course or did i just pick the wrong sites?

It does work, but the income from it may not be all that much.

I know that text links work pretty well, but isn’t there something special that you have to do to them so that you don’t get penalized by Google? Are they supposed to be nofollowed?
